Synopsis:

Blending research with perspectives of a clinician and stroke survivor's mother, this course provides practitioners new insights on how their powerful influence can improve results, boost communication and create thriving therapeutic relationships.

Description:

Marabeth Quin's life became completely altered in the blink of an eye in March 2012 when her 18-year-old daughter, Sophie, suffered a massive stroke damaging 80% of the left hemisphere of her brain, leaving her with right hemiplegia and global aphasia. Despite the bleak reality in front of her, Marabeth could not bear for one moment to imagine that Sophie's life was over, or that she would not reach all her dreams. So she didn't. Instead, she decided to tell a different story; one in which this experience would turn out to be powerfully life-changing in ways she could not even imagine. This was going to be an adventure, not a sad tragedy. That mindset would be the cocoon in which Sophie would recover. Sophie's rehab journey led her to Danielle Stoller, a physical therapist, who immediately noticed the positive impact Marabeth's optimistic mindset and strong expectation of well-being had on Sophie's healing. Through conversations with Marabeth and delving into research, Danielle gained a deeper understanding of the significant role thoughts and emotions play in the rehab process. She began assimilating science-based strategies to affect these elements into her patient interactions which transformed her clinical practice into a richer, more rewarding experience.

A collaboration between Marabeth and Danielle, this course provides practitioners new insights on how their powerful influence can improve results, boost communication skills and create thriving therapeutic relationships. An introduction into what research shows about how mindsets, beliefs, expectations, communication, and patient-provider relationships affect health and performance is discussed. Additionally, participants receive a real-life look at the impact of these variables through clinical examples and personal anecdotes. They gain strategies to achieve congruence between their verbal and nonverbal communication and to utilize human connection and presence to facilitate an optimal healing environment.

Course Objectives:
  • Recognize the role of the narrative brain in both the patient and practitioner in the rehab process.
  • Identify how thoughts, emotions, beliefs and expectations are expressed through verbal and nonverbal factors and impact the rehabilitation process.
  • Identify ways to achieve congruence between verbal and nonverbal communication when treating to facilitate positive outcomes.
  • Apply strategies to enhance the therapeutic relationship between patient and therapist.

Speakers:

Presented by Expanded Practice

Danielle Stoller, PT, MSPT, received her master’s degree in Physical Therapy from Washington University in 2000. She was Neuro-IFRAH® Certified in 2007 and completed Neuro-IFRAH® Instructor training in 2013. Danielle has specialized in the treatment of adult neuro patients in the outpatient setting since 2007. Danielle currently treats private clients in Nashville, TN. When not treating patients, Danielle collaborates with Marabeth Quin in Expanded Practice to teach PTs, OTs and SLPs research backed methods to effectively navigate the mental and emotional aspects of rehab. [email protected]

Marabeth Quin knew nothing about stroke when her daughter had one in 2012 at the age of 18. After 10 years of therapy and recovery efforts, Marabeth uses the experiences and insights she gained from watching her daughter recover and offers that knowledge to therapists to improve their understanding of their powerful role with patients, as well as the mental and emotional aspects at play in the recovery process they are facilitating. [email protected]
