Description:
The pelvic floor is a group of muscles that impact bladder, bowel, and sexual function as well as balance and mobility - all areas we address as occupational therapy practitioners on a daily basis. The muscles in the pelvic floor are just as important as the muscles in the upper and lower extremities, yet few practitioners outside of those who specialize in pelvic floor therapy feel confident discussing the basics with their patients. This course is designed to help occupational therapy practitioners across all rehabilitation settings gain knowledge of the pelvic floor muscles and function as well as apply practical strategies to address pelvic health for improved patient outcomes.

Objectives:

1) Identify the main muscle groups involved in pelvic floor function

2) Describe how diaphragmatic breathing impacts the pelvic floor

3) Learn how to implement strategies for toileting that can improve pelvic health

4) Understand the difference between exercises that relax the pelvic floor and exercises that strengthen the pelvic floor
