Description: Occupational therapy (OT) is an invaluable discipline to be integrated in community-based settings and the field has a history of meeting the ever-changing needs in society since its inception. Yet, OT has not been equitably positioned to effectively support the needs and priorities of particular marginalized groups due to a wide array of structural determinants. This CEU presentation will offer an opportunity for students, practitioners, researchers, educators, and advocates to explore the call for OT in emerging practice settings in Illinois, particularly settings engaging with people experiencing homelessness. Broad and local sociopolitical contexts will be discussed as well as supporting documentation for OT's role in emerging community-based settings. Session presenters will describe their successes and challenges in bringing OT into various organizations, such as supportive housing, medical respite, and street medicine settings. Paid employment, direct and consultative services, and fieldwork opportunities will be highlighted from the presenters' experiences. Participants will gain knowledge and skills in expanding community collaborations and innovative channels in Illinois for OT services to further contribute to this socially-relevant profession.
